In the 1960’s a quixotic English collector of “unattainable antiquities”, Sir Makepeace Gravenhenge, recruits an American Beat poet and Artful Dodger, Mohel, to nick the bones of the Buddha from a hidden reliquary on an island in the mouth of the Red Sea called Samadhi.
Mohel recruits a couple old accomplices, an Israeli former soldier and fiddler with acrobatic eyes, Carmen V. Paka, and an Ethiopian adventurer and trickster, Mchawi Jizi.
The island was a hotbed of intrigue between religious and political factions with the Great Powers noting its strategic location and rumors of untapped oil.
Into this plunges our unlikely trio of extemporizers, unwittingly, in their way of scaring up the relics, creating a new religious movement attracting followers, and thereby hangs a tale… of convoluted commitments and friction of faith shaking the very ground under their feet.
